TEAM GARMIN: Ben Melt and Yolandi Du Toit

“At Garmin we are passionate about sport and in particular cycling where the Garmin brand is well established in the community. By bringing top of the range cycling products and first to market radars for your bike, we are proud to show our commitment to this field by backing pro riders such as Team Garmin” comments Walter Mech, CEO of Garmin Sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2014 Garmin appointed Yolandi Du Toit as a brand ambassador and since then the relationship has grown from strength to strength. “Garmin shares my values, supports my goals and together we share in my success and disappointments on the sporting field. Since our partnership was formed I’ve learned so much from the Garmin team and have grown a lot in a sporting and personal capacity. I have also rediscovered my love for cycling and realise how much the sport offers both on and off the bike. One can only be proud and honoured to represent a great brand, company and people such as Garmin South Africa.” Said Yolandi Du Toit, Garmin Ambassador.

Yolandi teamed up with Ben Melt as stage race partner for the first time at the 2015 TransAlp stage race in Europe. Ben Melt needs little introduction as he has been racing mountain bikes for the better part of two decades, seeing the sport evolve from anonymous upstart to popular mainstream. It was promising that they would make a strong team and that was proven when they won the 2015 Southern Tropical Challenge – only their second stage race as a team.

Having a broader perspective Garmin saw the potential in Yolandi and Ben Melt racing as a duo, and this gave rise to Team Garmin, who will team up for select events going forward.

In between these select stage events, Yolandi will continue her role as a Garmin athlete while Ben Melt will continue to represent his current employers Squirtlube in conjunction with his newfound role as Garmin Brand Ambassador.

The newly formed partnership as Team Garmin will be showcased at the renowned Sani2C mountain bike stage race from the 12-14 May 2016. In July Team Garmin will tackle the Bike TransAlp stage race from Austria to Italy again, as well as the Glacier 360 in Iceland come late August. The rest of the racing calendar is still to be confirmed so make sure to keep an eye on their progress.

Garmin will be supporting Team Garmin with top of the range sports products to assist them in their training and racing. “Garmin’s bike computers work closely with the running watches to maximise their workout while the Varia devices will keep them safe on the road” said Mech. “This technology would not only help them track their training, but would also assist them in races where GPS navigation was a requirement.”

“Both Ben Melt and I will be capturing valuable data on the Garmin Edge 1000 devices as well as staying safe with the Garmin Varia Rearview Radar and lights. The Garmin fēnix 3 will be on Ben Melt’s wrist while I will be wearing my trusty, and quite beautiful, Forerunner 235 as a personal unit.” Comments Du Toit.

Garmin look forward to a positive partnership with Team Garmin, and wish them all the best in the upcoming stage races.
